We recommend bring a drone and we’re happy to show you how best to use it if you do. You’ll be glad you did!
Culture: Traditional Fishing Villages
The traditional fishing villages, with their iconic red and yellow Rorbuer (traditional fisherman cabins) perched on stilts along the water's edge, present a picturesque blend of human and natural history. These historic villages, set against the backdrop of rugged peaks, create a striking contrast and a window into the region's fishing heritage. Villages like Reine, Hamnøy, and Sakrisøy contrast beautifully against the white snow and dark mountains.
Fishing is the beating heart of Lofoten and it has been this way for over a 1000 years. Little has changed in this regard. Drying racks for stockfish (dried cod) and local fishing boats add cultural authenticity to images. This is oldest form of fish preservation in the world.
The Weather
Lofoten's ever-changing weather and lighting conditions can present challenges, but also contribute to the dramatic and varied landscapes that make each photograph unique. Rapidly changing weather conditions can create dramatic skies, with shifting clouds, snow showers, and bursts of sunlight, god rays and even spectacular rainbows. Thanks to the Gulf Stream, Lofoten experiences relatively mild winter temperatures compared to other regions at similar latitudes, typically ranging from 30°F to 37°F.
